How to make windows automatic and intelligent

“An automatic system is something that integrates with the window without compromising its use and its basic functions, i.e. the simple needs it meets; but rather, enhances them, giving the window new and improved characteristics that add to the comfort, wellbeing and security of indoor spaces”.

This is Master Italy‘s approach to automated windows, in the words of Lorenzo Lafronza, technical director at Master and host of the Edilportale Live Talk that was broadcast live on the Facebook and LinkedIn pages of Edilportale.

Master was founded in 1986, its core business to design and manufacture accessories and components for aluminium windows by means of research, investment and investigation of the material’s culture. Today Master is a global brand with a presence in over 58 countries around the world.

In approximately ten years, Master has developed a complete ecosystem called APRO, a visible or concealed automation system with minimalist design; a decor accessory that can be remotely controlled with a smartphone app or a voice assistant. As a solution that meets a wide range of needs, APRO is available for any type of material used to make windows, not just aluminium.

With APRO, the Master group prioritises security, but also comfortable living, as the system is programmed to ensure the exchange of air through natural ventilation. Automatic schedules for opening and closing windows can be set, improving the healthiness of air and maintaining a constant temperature.

Master is working with the Polytechnic University of Bari on a research project geared to improving the features of the system.

The research – already at an advanced stage – focuses on the development of sensors that can monitor indoor air quality. The sensor, which works on air quality parameters, will be able to transfer information about these directly to the APRO components, which will open or close the windows automatically for the time needed to restore optimal indoor conditions.

Mr Lafronza then explained all the technical and design aspects of the installation of automated window systems, such as the need for building and installation work or otherwise, what happens in a retrofit or a new build, and many other factors, which can be viewed in the video of the live talk.

Window automation also considerably increases the level of security, as it allows you to know the physical status of the window – open or closed – at all times; what’s more, the automated system can be fitted with alarm sensors or CCTV to monitor any attempted access.

 

How to make a window accessible with automation

The final section of the talk addresses the question of accessibility for windows.

According to law 236/1989, windows and doors must:

  • be easy to use;
  • have moving parts and mechanisms that are easy to move;
  • comply with specific dimensions, opening width and handle height;
  • have safe edges and corners;
  • have easily moveable opening panels.

Bear in mind that law 236/89 is not solely geared to users with disabilities, but contains previsions that aim to ensure accessibility, adaptability and ease of visiting for public and private buildings. To simplify, we could say that the basic concept of the law is that every element of the building should be accessible and usable for all, regardless of mobility.

Lorenzo Lafronza explained that the law is dated, and therefore does not take into account developments in the field of windows:

  • the use of increasingly heavy glass types to reduce heat and sound loss;
  • increased focus on window fixtures;
  • increased mirrored areas to ensure greater natural light.

Moreover, the law stipulates certain stringent criteria:

  • recommended handle height of 115 cm;
  • force needed to open/close windows of less than 8 kg.

“From a mechanical angle”, the engineer continued, “a new-generation window with a handle at 115 cm requires a considerably greater force to open or close. Automation is a response to this gap, and eliminates these constraints because it removes the need to deal physically with the window. An automated window system bypasses all the legal requirements, while at the same time guaranteeing accessibility. Furthermore, since it is counted as a way of removing architectural barriers, the installation of automated window systems is subject to the bonus 75% tax deduction.”
